Kirstie Alley, star of Network 10's Cheers, put her own marriage woes aside to save best friend John Travolta's engagement to actress Kelly Preston when the couple broke up a while ago. Heartbroken John flew to Kirstie's hideaway in Maine and begged for help. "John was absolutely beside himself when Kelly broke off their eight-month engagement," an insider reveals. "John and Kelly planned to wed later this year, but then they had a lovers' spat and she broke off the engagement. John was distraught. He desperatley wants to marry Kelly. He wants to be a father and feels Kelly is the perfect mother". "When she refused to listen to his pleas, John called Kirstie and begged her to help get Kelly back. At first, Kirstie told John that maybe it was all for the best that he and Kelly had broken up, but John wouldn't listen. He flew to Maine, where Kirstie was staying for the summer, trying to sort out problems in her marriage to Parker Stevenson. John convinced Kirstie how much he wanted to marry Kelly. 'She is definitley the right one for me', he told Kirstie. 'I can't let her get away. She wont even take my telephone calls. Maybe she'll take yours." |
The insider adds: "It was when John tearfully explained what having a child would mean to him that Kirstie agreed to make the call. She lost her own baby not long ago, and she sympathised with him. She made the phone call, and Kelly broke down and confessed that she really did love John and had been heart-broken since their break-up." "Kirstie told her to put the past behind her and make a new life with John. And she said: 'I have never seen John so deeply in love like this. He has never proposed before, so it really means you are his one and only. Kelly was overwhelmed. 'If you, who knows John better than anyone, says that he truly loves me, I'll believe it', she said." "John was on the next plane back to Los Angeles and into Kelly's arms. They spent a night of love in her secluded Santa Monica house." "John was so grateful that he called Parker to tell him what a wonderful wife he had. Parker was so moved by John's story that he flew to Maine the next day to celebrate his birthday with Kirstie - and to announce he had been invited to join her in the cast of Cheers, which means they will be able to spend more time with each other. They spent the weekend together and decided that their marriage is definitely worth saving." |
